Online Crane Training - How to Use Zoom

Written by CICB | Mar 30, 2020 4:10:00 PM

CICB uses Zoom for its online crane programs. This popular technology allows students to participate in the class just as if you were in the room itself. To get the most out of your training and to ensure a smooth experience for all users, we ask all our students to take the time to read through the instructions below before your class starts.

Joining a Meeting

Before the day of the class, you will need to download Zoom. The link to do so will be in the email you receive when you register.

You will also be emailed an invite to the first day’s class. The email will include the meeting number. When the class starts, simply open Zoom on your laptop, desktop or phone, click ‘Join Meeting’, and type in the number and, if the instructor has given you one, a password also.

Muting

To keep distractions to a minimum and avoid poor audio quality, please keep yourself on mute except when you have a question or are asked for a contribution by the instructor. To mute yourself, move your mouse so that the options on the bottom of your screen appear. Click the mute button in the far left corner. You can also use the ‘spacebar’ to turn your mute on and off.

Please be aware that the instructor also has the ability to mute you and will do so if you forget.

Pinning the Instructor's Screen

Zoom is set up to show you the person who is talking at that time. To keep your screen locked on the instructor:

  1. Make sure you are on speaker view, not gallery view
  2. Hover over the small window that shows the instructor
  3. Click on the three lines and select ‘Pin View’

Annotating

CICB’s online crane classes are fully interactive. As part of this interactivity, you will have the chance to annotate whenever the instructor shares pictures and diagrams with you. To access the annotate function:

  1. Wait for the instructor to share his screen
  2. Move your mouse to the top of the screen and click the dropdown that says ‘View Options’
  3. Select ‘Annotate’

You will then be able to leave comments, draw freehand, or position arrows on the screen for everyone to see.

Chat

At times, CICB’s online crane training programs may feature two instructors. While the first instructor teaches, a second instructor will be available by remote chat to answer any questions students may have.

To access this feature in zoom

  1. Move your mouse to the bottom of the screen
  2. Click the icon that says ‘Chat’
  3. Share your message

Depending on the nature of the question, the instructor may choose to answer you individually, share the answer with the whole group or even have the other instructor pause and address the question.

Please note – this feature will not be available in every online crane program
