In response to growing demand for testing and practice time, Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau (CICB) recently purchased additional cranes for its Houston and Orlando training centers. With the acquisition of a Tadano GR 150XL-1, CICB has quality swing-cab, fixed-cab, lattice, and knuckle-boom cranes on site in Houston. Likewise, the recent purchase of a Link Belt 138H II Lattice Crawler Crane means CICB Orlando is now one of the few places in the southeast to provide weekly Lattice Boom training and practical examinations.

Since December 2018, mobile crane operators in construction must be certified on the class of crane they intend to operate. OSHA 1926.1427 Subpart CC states, “The employer must ensure that each operator is trained, certified/licensed, and evaluated”. Candidates are encouraged to train with companies such as CICB that prepare them to take their nationally accredited certification through the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO).

In order to comply with the training and certification requirements, employers send their operators to training centers such as the ones provided by CICB in Houston and Orlando. John O’Connor, manager of CICB’s Career School in Houston, pointed to the direct, positive impact of CICB’s recent crane purchases saying, “by increasing the number and quality of cranes at our disposal, it ensures that each attendee is thoroughly trained, tested and evaluated. Seat time is invaluable, so we are delighted to add these cranes to our fleet.”

As the demand for crane operators continues to grow, large testing facilities must provide more equipment for candidates to test on. CICB provides multiple cranes to meet the NCCCO Testing on fixed cab, swing cab, knuckle-boom, and lattice boom cranes. Since each crane is unique, CICB also provides candidates with the opportunity to spend time practicing on the testing machines and crane simulator to allow for greater familiarity with the equipment. The recent purchases mean more practice time is available, even with full classrooms.
