Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau (CICB), the leading provider of training and inspection in the crane, lifting & rigging industry, will be offering an informal Q&A session at CONEXPO 2020. The event, held over a complimentary lunch, will be an opportunity for anyone in the industry to bring their standards and safety questions. Registration is open to all and attendees will meet at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino on Wednesday March 11th, from 11am-1pm.
Answering the questions will be Jim Wiethorn, PH.D., P.E., an Engineering Specialist at Haag Engineering, and author of ‘Crane Accidents – A Study of Causes and Trends to Create a Safer Work Environment, 1983-2013’, the unprecedented, comprehensive look at over 500 crane accidents, as well as Crane Inspection & Certification Bureau’s Standards Expert and Technical Advisor Larry Kime, and John O’Connor, CICB’s Career School Director and General Manager, Houston Operations.
In December 2018 OSHA introduced new language into 29 CFR 1926.1427, redefining requirements for all crane operators, while still requiring employers to make the final judgement on whether their operators are qualified. As Dr. Wiethorn revealed in his doctoral research, 93% of crane accidents are caused by human intervention, making it vital to correctly prepare and identify qualified personnel. Citing a tower crane collapse in San Francisco in 1989, Dr. Wiethorn notes, “the lack of training and not understanding duties and responsibilities can result in tragedy.” The event will be a chance for attendees to ensure they understand new terminology and are compliant with new regulations.
CONEXPO 2020, one of the most awaited events in Las Vegas, is the largest international trade show for the construction industries. The expo will feature over 2,500 exhibitors and is expected to draw over 130,000 attendees.
